Frequently asked questions
What formats can I type to look up a character?
Four formats: U+1F600 (Unicode notation), 0x1F600 (hex), 128512 (decimal), or an HTML entity like 😀. You can also type a name such as 'arrow' to search the curated collection.
Does the name search cover all of Unicode?
No. Name search covers a curated set of 187 common characters (arrows, currency, math, Greek, symbols, emoji basics). Code-point lookup, however, works for every one of the 1.1 million Unicode code points via String.fromCodePoint.
How are the UTF-8 bytes calculated?
They are encoded live in your browser with the standard TextEncoder API, so the bytes shown are exactly what the character becomes in a UTF-8 file. Nothing is looked up from a table.
