Frequently asked questions
What is a ULID and why use it instead of a UUID?
A ULID is a 26-character identifier that starts with a timestamp, so ULIDs sort in creation order automatically. Unlike random UUIDs, they are lexicographically sortable, URL-safe, and still carry 80 bits of randomness, which makes them great for database keys.
What does monotonic mean here?
If you generate several ULIDs within the same millisecond, the random part is incremented instead of re-rolled, so every ID stays unique and the order is still correct. This matches the official ULID monotonicity rule.
What do the characters in a ULID mean?
The first 10 characters encode the Unix timestamp in milliseconds using Crockford base32 (no confusing I, L, O or U). The last 16 characters are 80 bits of cryptographic randomness. Use the decoder above to extract the timestamp from any ULID.
