Pixel widths are measured live with canvas text metrics (title at 20px Arial, description at 14px Arial), the same approach search results use. 600 px and 920 px are safe display targets; wide letters like W and M eat more pixels than narrow ones like i and l.
Frequently asked questions
Why measure pixels instead of just characters?
Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width, not character count. A title with many wide letters (W, M) can be cut off at 50 characters while a narrow one fits 65. This tool measures real rendered width with canvas text metrics.
What are the safe limits?
Roughly 600 pixels (about 60 characters) for titles and 920 pixels (about 160 characters) for descriptions on desktop. These are guidelines: Google may rewrite or truncate based on the query.
Does the preview match Google exactly?
It is a close approximation using the same truncation behavior (ellipsis at the pixel limit). Actual rendering varies by device, query and Google's own rewrites.
