Frequently asked questions

What is the type-token ratio?

It is the number of unique words (types) divided by the total word count (tokens). A score of 1.0 means no word repeats at all; lower scores mean more repetition.

What counts as low, typical, or rich?

Below 0.40 is low variety, 0.40 to 0.60 is the typical range for everyday prose, and above 0.60 shows a rich, varied vocabulary. Very short texts naturally score higher, so compare texts of similar length.

What are hapax legomena?

Words that appear exactly once in your text. A high hapax count relative to total words signals fresh, non-repetitive wording.
