Why six sizes?
A single .ico file is a container. Windows picks the best size for each context: 16px for tabs and taskbar, 32px for desktop icons, 48px for large views, and up to 256px for high-DPI displays. One file covers them all.
Frequently asked questions
Is the output a real .ico file?
Yes. It follows the ICO specification exactly: ICONDIR header, six ICONDIRENTRY records with correct sizes and offsets, and PNG-compressed image data. Windows Explorer, browsers and icon tools open it as a genuine icon.
My PNG is not square. What happens?
The image is center-cropped to the largest square before resizing, so icons are never stretched. A square source image gives the most predictable result.
How is this different from the favicon generator?
The favicon generator makes individual PNG files plus a small 3-size .ico for websites. This converter makes one full Windows icon with six sizes up to 256px, meant for apps, installers and desktop shortcuts.
