Frequently asked questions
What causes mojibake?
Usually UTF-8 text decoded with the wrong encoding, such as Windows-1252 or Latin-1. The bytes get misread and accented letters turn into sequences like é or ’.
Will it damage text that is already correct?
No. The repair only replaces known mis-encoded sequences. Correct text has none of them, so it passes through unchanged, and Undo restores your original anyway.
Does it handle every language?
It covers the most common Western European accented letters and punctuation. Rare scripts with unusual double-encoding may need manual cleanup.
