SHA-256 is the standard choice for verifying downloads. SHA-1 is listed only for legacy checks and should not be used for security.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read with the FileReader API and hashed with WebCrypto on your own device. It never leaves your browser.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 for general verification of downloads. SHA-512 is also fine. SHA-1 is only for matching legacy checksums and is not secure.
How do I verify a download?
Paste the checksum published by the software author into the verify box. If it matches the computed hash, the file arrived intact.
