Is the .ico file a real Windows icon?
Yes. It is built byte by byte to the ICO specification: an ICONDIR header, one ICONDIRENTRY per size, and PNG-compressed image data for 16, 32 and 48 pixels. Windows, browsers and favicon checkers read it as a genuine icon.
Why is my image cropped to a square?
Favicons must be square. The tool center-crops your upload to the largest centered square before resizing, so nothing is stretched. For best results, start with a square image.
Which files do I actually need on my site?
favicon.ico covers browsers and bookmarks, the 32px PNG is the modern standard tab icon, and the 180px apple-touch-icon is used when someone saves your site to an iPhone home screen. Copy the snippet above into your page head.
