Frequently asked questions
What is a checksum?
A checksum is a fixed-length fingerprint computed from a file's bytes. If even one byte changes, the checksum changes completely, so comparing checksums proves a download is intact.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the standard for file verification and is what most software publishers provide. SHA-512 and SHA-384 are stronger variants, while SHA-1 is legacy and only useful when a publisher still ships SHA-1 values.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and hashed entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Large files are read in chunks so your browser stays responsive.
